“And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me” (Matthew 28:18).
“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God” (Romans 13:1).
Background
In the United States, the two main political parties are the Republican and the Democratic Party. Both parties would argue that they want what’s best for America, but their visions to achieve their goals are different. Those differences keep the parties at odds, ultimately separating American citizens based on their political views. This includes brothers and sisters in Christ.
Think about it!
Prior to the 2024 election, a fellow sister in Christ attended a prayer meeting at her local church. About halfway through the prayer, the minister prayed for Donald Trump to be reelected. She couldn’t believe it. As far as she was concerned, the minister had hijacked their prayer to push his Republican agenda. She didn’t want Donald Trump to win the election. She was and is a Democrat. Therefore, she planned to vote for Kamala Harris.
Stuck between a rock and a hard place, she opened her eyes and looked toward the door. She did not want to make a scene, so she sat quietly and waited for the minister to finish. Afterwards, she felt disheartened and disconnected from her church leadership. Have you ever felt that way? I have, more than once.
Go to the Father
When we feel disheartened or disconnected from the body, we need to go to the head of the church. For the record, I am not talking about the lead pastor. While there may be time for that down the line, I’m talking about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We need to spend time in his presence. “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. ” (Colossians 1:16-18 ESV). The word preeminent means, “surpassing all others.” Hence the title, “Political Parties Must Bow to the Name of Jesus.” He is not coming back for a political party. He is coming back for his church. (I think we forget that sometimes).
Pray about it
Prayer gives us an opportunity to look beyond ourselves. Prayer gives us an opportunity to communicate with the One whose kingdom will reign forever! Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Jesus is Love. He is Truth. Jesus is the Prince of Peace. He is Everlasting. We can’t place gods and idols before Him. So, I have to ask:
- Has your candidate become your god?
- Has your political party become your kingdom?
- Have you exchanged spiritual principles for political agendas?
- Has your agenda or strong conviction become an idol?
Think about it. Then, go to the Father and pray about it.
