How Could You Vote for Someone Who……?

I Voted!

Background

Recently, someone asked, “How could someone vote for a person who supports abortion?” As I pondered that question, which “seemed” to come out of nowhere, since we weren’t talking about that, several other questions came to mind. From those questions, this post was birthed! So, what seemed like a statement that came out of nowhere was actually the moment of conception for this post, so let’s get into it, Soul Searching Family! I’ve missed you, by the way! I pray this post finds you searching in 2026.

Think about it

So, the question before us today is: How could a person vote for someone who…..? (Fill in the blank). Everyone has something that moves them one way or another, and we always feel like our conviction is holier than that of our brothers and sisters.

One person says, “I could never vote for a person who is not Pro-Life because God hates the shedding of innocent blood. Nothing is more important than an innocent child’s life. Every child deserves to live.”

Another person says, “I could never vote for a person who opposes gun control because God hates the shedding of innocent blood. Nothing is more important than life. We should do everything possible to protect our children from school shootings and accidental shootings in their homes.”

So, which brother and sister in Christ is holier? Is it the one who chose their political party to save unborn babies from abortion or the one who chose their political party to save children from gun violence in schools? Yikes! Are we really going there? Yes! Let’s go to the Father.

Where is your journal?

As you prepare to go to the Father, please pray Psalm 139:23-24 over your life. It states, “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!”

As I stated previously, 2020 was a difficult time for me. I judged fellow brothers and sisters in Christ based on their political affiliation. I blocked church members, co-workers, family, and old friends on social media when I did not agree with their political views. That judgement did not allow the fruit of the Spirit to flow through me. I was not patient or kind. I was short- tempered and angry. Therefore, my words and actions grieved the Holy Spirit.

Please allow God, who is our Heavenly Father, to search your heart! You don’t have to leave the same way you came! (It’s okay if you want to grab your journal off the nightstand, and come back later).

Go to the Father

Psalm 139: 3-4 ESV states, “You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.”

What I love about Psalm 139 is that it reminds us that God knows us. We cannot hide from Him. Therefore, we need to go to the Father and allow Him to show us the things in our lives that grieve Him, so we can welcome the changes He wants to make in our lives.

So, as I thought about the question that is before us, I was led to 1 Corinthians 12. It’s so good, by the way! If you haven’t read it, you should. We will refer to it often on this soul searching journey. Today I would like to focus on 1 Corinthians 12: 4-7. It states, “ There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.” In other words, we were created and called to serve the kingdom; however, that does not mean that we were created and called to serve the kingdom the same way.

Some brothers and sisters have a heart for unborn babies. It does not mean that everyone in the kingdom shouldn’t contend for life; it just means that some are more passionate in their pursuit than others. This is not a political agenda for them! This is their assignment. Their contributions include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Supporting expectant mothers and families in their community
  2. Supporting adoption/foster care agencies locally and worldwide
  3. Attending events that promote and communicate the pro-life message effectively
  4. Marching for life and attending pro-life rallies
  5. Praying, fasting, and hosting peaceful vigils outside abortion clinics.
  6. Writing letters or calling their local representatives to advocate for pro-life legislation.
  7. Aligning themselves with the political party that supports their beliefs

On the other hand, some brothers and sisters have a heart for protecting children from gun violence. Again, it does not mean that everyone in the kingdom shouldn’t contend for our children’s safety, but some are more passionate in their pursuit than others. This is another example of God’s heart on display. Their contributions include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Supporting victims of gun violence and empowering them to tell their stories
  2. Educating gun owners on locking up firearms to prevent guns from getting into the wrong hands
  3. Marching and attending rallies to bring community awareness
  4. Praying, fasting, and hosting a candlelight vigil in a designated area. (Sometimes a shooting took place in that exact location)
  5. Writing letters or calling their local representatives to advocate for gun control
  6. Aligning themselves with the political party that supports their beliefs.

Both examples represent brothers and sisters in Christ who were created and called by God. While He gave them different assignments, which can place them on different sides of the political aisle, it is ALL for our Heavenly Father’s glory.

Pray about It

So after much prayer, it is obvious to me that it is very easy for brothers and sisters in Christ to vote for different political parties. It does not mean that one person’s assignment is holier than the other. It bears repeating that God creates us to do different things for the Kingdom, but it’s all for His glory! Instead of questioning each other’s commitment to Christ based on a political party, we should actively seek to pray for one another because WE are a part of the body of Christ. That supersedes everything!

Our allegiance isn’t to a man-made system. We are a part of God’s kingdom! Our allegiance is to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He is not coming back for Republicans. He is not coming back for Democrats. He is coming back for a church that is holy! When we recognize that, Satan will not be able to use political parties to divide us. Think about it! Then go to the Father and pray about it.
