Do you know who “they” are? Well, “they” are a part of a lot of conversations. “They” had a role in Act Three and Act Four. Do you remember? In Act Three, Principal Knight’s wife, Cindy placed black people in the “they” category when she said, “All they want is to pull out of their phones and cause trouble for everyone.” The fact is: one African American woman pulled out her phone and recorded her husband using a racial slur; however, Cindy harbored resentment toward the entire race and refused to deal with the “real” issue. Think about it! Her husband used a racial slur to describe pre-teens, which is a clear sign of racism. Don’t you think?
In Act Four, Stephan Thompson states, “… You know firsthand where they stand. I’m the same way. I don’t have time for their games. I don’t go to lunch with them or entertain their conversations about sports because I know how they truly feel about people who look like you and me.” Based on past experiences, Stephan Thompson concluded that all white people were the same, so he placed them in the “they” category as a defense mechanism but he didn’t realize he’d become the very thing he tried to protect himself from his entire life… a racist. Both characters believed that their reasons were valid; however, I could not agree with either one of their positions on the matter. Could you? Now before we get too deep in this conversation, I have to share the scripture that just came to mind.
Matthew 7: 1-5 NIV states, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”
Okay! So, what were you about to say? (I know you can’t see me but I am leaning in really close because I know what you’re about to say is going to be really good.) Oh! I understand. You want to reserve judgement. You want to keep praying for our brothers and sisters, who remind us of Cindy Knight and Stephan Thompson. You know what? That sounds like a great idea.
